Matt Cutts on WordPress SEO – Great Basic Stuff
August 20, 2009
My friend from our real estate office Scott Hack who does a WordPress Oldham County Real Estate Blog just pointed me to a Matt Cutts video that I wanted to pass along. Those who go to EricOnSearch with any regularity see the Google basic SEO download on my front page.
Here is a presentation from WordCamp 2009 where Matt does the same thing for bloggers using the WordPress platform.
First off, I think Matt Cutts does a tremendous job of helping webmasters do what they do better and more effectively. As I have said many times, I think too many people talk to him looking for the “silver bullet”.
There is NO silver bullet.
There is NO quick fix.
He uses the example of Katamari (Google that if you don’t know) to describe how True Authority is built. That philosophy alone rules out going big fast and / or buying your way to the top.
We had a discussion in our blogging group this week about just this sort of thing– the basics of blogging with a purpose and getting it right.
I kept getting asked in the group what the “secret” was. Seriously. No secret. Build relationships online. Build relevance. Build your online reputation. Not sexy enough for you? Too bad. It is what works.
SEO wise, these are the basics…but the BASICS WORK. (re-read that…it is the money quote).
Can you take things more technically and enhance WordPress even further? SURE.
That should be done AFTER the basics are done.
If after watching Matt’s video, anyone has questions or thoughts, fire them up in the comments section and let’s discuss them.
Thoughts?

Eric. This video was amazing for a beginner like me to watch. The 45 minutes just blew by; I actually with it were longer. The information was informative and shocking all at once. I like how Google looks at so many different things. The tid bits by Eric Cutts were great information on a few of the basics. I recommend anyone what this video, it was very inciteful.
Eric,
This video really hits the nail right on the head. There are no major secret’s other than exactly what you stated below. It’s important to build strong relationships and build quality content that is interesting and that makes logical sense.
Thanks for sharing this with me I love watching these type’s of video’s

Thanks for sharing that awesome video, Eric. I couldn’t make it to WordCamp, but videos like this one help me and others gett a good idea of the quality speakers and content that was present. Matt Cutts is always informative and entertaining, so thanks again!
If you can’t make it to hear Matt in person, set aside the 45 minutes and watch this video. For the novice there is so much information it would probably be wise to watch the video and then return to watch it again in a month or so. For the more experienced, what a great refresher course. Thanks for making this resource available Eric.
Matt always gives great content although sometimes people latch on to the smallest thing he says and go off like a headless chicken. Thanks for the video, I had not seen it before and may well link to your page. Thanks
LOVED this. I am just getting started with SEO and there is so much to learn I think my head is going to explode. Thanks to Matt for sharing a look behind the curtain a little bit about what goes on at Google. I am going to read the rest of Eric’s blogs now. Does anyone know if his slides were available somewhere? Many of them weren’t shown and I was too fascinated to take notes. I may just have to watch it again.
